[OOC] Character Information

Name: Jareth Danver Tasselmark, heir to Dunesmorough and Cantalline
Title: Knight of Dunesmorogh
Age: 23
Parents: Lord Jaren of Dunesmorough, Lady Veria (formerly of Cantalline)

World Information:
The world could be considered just before the end of the medieval era, with horses and ships being the primary modes of transportation for most humans, although then magic comes into play and some are willing to pay hefty sums to mages to create portals through mirrors that allow them to travel great distances instantaneously. This practice has been forbidden in most kingdoms, except for in the cases of royalty and nobility, because if a person gains access to the magic word or phrase they can travel through their portal and into those of others.

Other forms of magic are used more commonly, such as natural magics that draw energy from the earth itself and living things. Natural magics are often used for medicinal purposes, such as healing wounds or making potions and tonics to cure ailments, or even for curing wounds to the soul, but can also be used for gardening to help create bountiful harvests and beautiful landscapes. Then there is oral magics, which involve a person combining their own energy with a spell phrase they have to say out loud. Oral magic can be used offensively, such as in a spell to cast a fire or cause something to explode, or it can be used defensively to create shields or barriers. Oral magics are much harder to learn and require years of study and precision so one going into this magic can begin training even before they reach their adolescence if it is thought they have an affinity for it.

Then there are more dangerous magics, such as alchemy and the black arts (necromancy, demon summoning, etc) which are also banned from being practiced in many countries, but not in Eachenmark, Jareth’s home country. Instead they are only used by a special group of advisors and mages appointed by the King. What they use these magics for is unknown to most citizens in the kingdom. Guns and fire arms do not exist, but black powder is used in things such a fireworks and some magics (often a mage will carry some on their person and use it when casting spells that need fire to cause explosions).

Culturally, things differ from country to country. Eachenmark is a monarchy with a parliament but the ruler still has the primary power and authority. Line to the throne goes from oldest to oldest, for example Jareth’s uncle would be fifth in line for the throne, because he was the firstborn, but as he was disowned the role falls to the next generation and the oldest child of that generation, which is Jareth. There is a definite class gap between the nobility and the peasantry, but there has been a rising class of bourgeoisie as trade booms between the countries and textiles are on the rise.

Eachenmark has 15 provinces and Parliament is made up of two houses, the House of Nobles, of which every Lord of every province is either an active member or has a Lord-in-Standing, a lower level noble member of the family who votes in his/her stead. The House of Freemen is the house of the non-nobles who are voted into their positions through elections in their counties. The population of tax-paying citizens of each county province is collected per county every ten years and it is through that population regulation that it is decided how many Parliament members each county should haves.

Character Background:
Jareth is the son of Lord Jaren and Lady Veria. Lady Veria is the daughter of Sir Lord Danver Ulsterbrand of Cantalline, who had been fifth in line for the throne of Eachenmark until his death. Currently Jareth is the fifth in line for the throne because of this, as he is Lady Veria’s only child, but should his mother’s disinherited, older brother, Dansen, ever bear a child, that child will be allowed to pass over Jareth even though his father has been disowned, as per Lord Danver’s wishes (which is unlikely to happen as Dansen’s disinheritance was primarily due to him refusing to marry and bear an heir as his father wished). And should this occur, Jareth will fall to tenth in line for the throne, considering his father’s position (as his father would never willingly take on the crown himself). Much of this is moot because Jareth could never see himself as king. He deeply believes that his true role in the world is as a loyal knight serving a just ruler.

Jareth’s parents are older (already into or nearing their sixties) as they spent the first fifteen years of their marriage trying for a child and not being able to have one. It took calling in the midwife Elder Marisa from the small country of Senecal before their hopes could be realized. She is a master of natural magics and with her constant care and magical supervision, Veria not only became pregnant but carried a healthy Jareth to term.

Jaren and Veria were already considered laid back, very generous and benevolent nobles in their province of Dunesmorough, just but kind and always seeking for ways to do what was best for their people. That was the way of the Tasselmarks, who are often considering Common Nobles for how unlike most nobles in Eachenmark they behave (which some also claim is why the Tasselmark family has dwindled because as the saying going, the good die young). But the way that Jareth came to be led them to see him as their miracle child who could do no wrong. They spoiled him and coddled him, giving him anything he could ever want and praising him for anything he ever attempted, even though he often failed. This praise bled into everyone in the estate treating him in much the same way.

Jareth idolizes his grandfather Sir Lord Danver, and wants to grow up to be just like him, a Crusading Knight who will go off to fight wars and claim victory and glory for his King (or Queen, Jareth isn’t picky). For this he spent his early years trying to learn Oral magic, but failed, and thus he turned to swordsmanship. Years and years of training and tutors (who were paid well to praise and encourage Jareth just as his parents did), had given him a very false sense of his own skills. He’s arrogant, because of his noble birth and the history of his families, proud, impulsive, but also very earnest to make a name for himself and prove himself worthy of being the heir of the Tasselmark and Ulsterbrand lineage.

Because of his arrogance and penchant for taking on any challenger that comes his way, Jareth was beaten up a lot as a child and teenager and even into young adulthood. He would keep getting up over and over, due to his high level of physical endurance, but eventually the healers of Red Oak (the name of the estate of the Tasselmarks), insisted that he learn basic healing techniques so that he could manage his own healing. He spent too much time in the healing wing while insisting he didn’t need any medical attention (he’s broken plenty of bones). He never thinks he’s as hurt as he truly is.

Abiltiies:
The natural magic used by Elder Marisa to keep Lady Veria healthy while pregnant and to carry Jareth to term has given him more durability and endurance than the average human. He can withstand a severe beating with just some cuts and bruises and even a fall from five stories isn’t enough to seriously injure him. The flaw of this is that he’s so used to his endurance that he sometimes doesn’t recognize his own injuries, to the point that he’ll try to walk on a broken leg or not even realize when a bone is poking out of his skin.

He is a mediocre swordsman at best, poor coordination and too impulsive. He can’t predict his opponent’s movements and uses too much or too little force. He has an inherent affinity for natural magics, and has been trained in basic healing, primarily to take care of his own wounds but he knows how to use it on others if need be. He doesn’t use those abilities unless absolute necessary because he looks down on them.
